Old Trawler

After 30 years of having sailboat, I am looking to buy a trawler. We sold our sailboat 1 year ago and we would like to get back to water.

The plan would be to live onboard and then retire in 2 years.

The trawler in my price range of 60-80k is mostly from the 80.

I never had a motorboat before. I suppose for the hull, boat integrity i look the same as for a sailboat. For the engine how do you evaluate the remaining life. What's the typical number of hours?

You might want to check out TrawlerForum.com. Many past sailors who have converted to power.

As to your question on engine hours, overall condition are more important than engine hours (by far). I know of no recreational engine that has died of old age - something preventable has killed it along the way (#1 cause of death is exhaust related).

Common issues with older trawlers are rusted fuel tanks and leaky teak decks.

Good luck with your transition.
