Re: PB vs trawler

I have had twin Cummins B Series 5.9 liter turbo Diesels on a research vessel for over 28 years, sometimes we sit on station for hours at a time, sometimes we are on a plane and sometimes we are going more moderate speeds. The idling part has never been a problem. Cummins does say to run it at a higher speed periodically to blow out carbon accumulation. I have never seen where they say you can only idle for 10 minutes.

All boats require more rudder at slower speeds to maintain heading. Same with airplanes. It is not unique to powerboats.

Get the boat you like the most. Test drive it for a day or so.

Yes, though she did get a new engine during the conversion.
There was a 55fter, identical conversion done beside her at the same time and they repowered with a 6lxb Gardner.

We have the Gardner details and notes in with our 855 Cummins manual so it seems they may have been considering the smaller engine for ours.

While I would like the marginally better fuel economy the Gardner provides I far prefer the pricing and easy availability of the Cummins parts.

There are also plenty of remanufactured third party parts for Cummins engines. You are not forced to pay dealer prices. The engines are used everywhere....trucks, generators etc.

Yep, went through this recently with heat exchanger end cap gaskets

In Australia, from Cummins dealer, easily damaged paper gaskets were near $300 each plus freight and a 2 week wait as not enough in stock.
So $3000 plus for the 10 I was buying.

Rubber gaskets from Cummins China cost $95 for the 10 airfreighted to my door in 4 days.
Being rubber I'll probably never use the other 8.

You can peen paper or cork gaskets from sheets of stock.

That was my original plan but the material cost here was more expensive than the pre made gaskets flown in from China
