questions about bayliner 3880

hello all,
I haven't posted since I sold our old seaway (several years). Finally going to retire soon, wife and I are looking for another boat so we may join your ranks. The bayliner 3880 has features that we both like and can afford, but I would beg for some of your valuable experience and opinion's about sturdiness and handling, Our plan is for ICW and coastal cruising as much as possible.
thanks for any input.

Re: questions about bayliner 3880

The bigger Bayliners built on the west coast have a pretty good rep. Several Bayliner owners are on trawlerforum.com (sister site) so you might get more feedback there...

Not so many powerboaters here...

I’ve had a 38 for going on 11 years & liveaboard 8-9 months of the year. Any questions I will be happy to answer. I love the boats economy, comfort and dependable Hino diesels.

Re: questions about bayliner 3880

Often specific boat models have specific good and bad things, so asking on the Bayliner site would be good. I have not found anything too badly done on Bayliner's in general, OTHER THAN the problem typical to most power cruisers: Rotted transom core or rotted fuel tank supports/stringers. On my 80's Bayliner the dashboard fiberglass was 3/8-1/2" thick!
I don't know how many builders used a non cored transom though. Tollycraft did.

Re: questions about bayliner 3880

I think cored transoms were mostly common on smaller boats, particularly with sterndrives. Larger power boats often have solid glass transoms. My boat, for example, has cored decks, but a solid glass hull and transom and hollow fiberglass stringers (no core).

Re: questions about bayliner 3880

That's good. I don't know how many I've seen with core ruined not just by an outdrive, but from a swim step bracket or even just a depth sounder bracket screwed into the transom!
I guess the Tollycraft theme is quite old, but people used to tout the solid core and their boats were mostly large, at least in later years.
