So what's wrong with this yacht?

Found on several (including eBay) broker sites:
https://www.yatco.com/vessel/info/22...-United-States
1992 San Lorenzo 80 feet-way too much boat but the price screams somethings not right??

Re: So what's wrong with this yacht?

Limited market demand for a large motor yacht (expensive moorage, maintenance and operation) in a 27 year old package.

Re: So what's wrong with this yacht?

Besides the limited market, it is entirely possible that there are issues that the pictures don''t show. I've seen a number of boats that -- once I saw them in person -- I realized all the pictures in the ad had to be from 10 years ago or more.

I met a couple a few years ago that had bought an 85’ ketch for US$150,000 that was in beautiful condition. The previous owner had died and his children wanted to get rid of it fast.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: So what's wrong with this yacht?

Not much demand for an 80’ boat over 25 years old. Any buyer able to afford the mooring fees and maintenance can probably afford a much newer vessel. To move a boat like this you practically have to give it away......

Lots of brand new gear, almost like there was a fire or flood.

That is a lot of boat for the money. That being said a lot to maintain, fuel and berth. Hell of a liveaboard :-)

It's just a lot of boat for most people. More than they need, more than they can afford.

Limited number of buyers in that range.

I recently saw an ad for a boat I owned like a decade ago...and there were pics OF ME on the boat that I had supplied when I was selling the boat, long, long ago.

I've also fallen victim to this scam, wasting hours in a car to see a boat that looks nothing like the ad. Wait, what...is that how tinder works too?

Everyone has a phone with a camera in their pocket (or glued to their face more likely) so absolutely no excuse not to have recent, accurate pictures.

Re: So what's wrong with this yacht?

9The answer is in the ad. It only sleeps 8. For an 80 foot yachts too few berths if the owner wants to use her as a charter. And the yacht is too old if the owner wants her for purely personal use. And she is too expensive for your run of the mill dreamer. Although the last point may have as an answer someone who came into easy money but not enough to buy new in that size.

I know a guy who has an 80 foot sailboat on the market for over a decade. Can't afford anything now but he was such a dreamer with some easy money over 15 years ago when he first bought her with expectations of easy charters not only covering his costs but making him enough for a decent living. It looked good on paper. In reality he could not afford $5,000 fill ups or some such. Never mind the regular maintainence such boat requires.

Re: So what's wrong with this yacht?

Not much said about the engines or systems. My guess is it was used as a floating condo and there was no maintenance done on the systems and engines. It's much worse to not use the systems. It's almost 30 years old. They did replace the electronics. I don't know why they would do that if they didn't use it. IDK. There is usually much more said about the engines. How many hours, last serviced. They don't say what kind of engines they are. Something is wrong!

Re: So what's wrong with this yacht?

As soon as I clicked on the link and saw a 1992 80' for $499k I thought "Yeah that seems right".

It's the age that does it.
