Teak Oil Wrinkles

Gentlemen, what causes teak oil wrinkles? My swim platform has wrinkled twice now. I have washed with oxygen bleach and sanded twice with the same results, any suggestions?

Can you be more specific about what you mean when you say "teak oil"? A brand? Your application method? What did you use when you talk about "oxygen bleach"?

Yes, brush application the first time, sponge brush the second time. It was Helmsman brand. The bleach was an oxygenated bleach so as not to be harsh.

Sounds to me you are referring to what is called alligatoring. The first coat has not dried sufficiently and is still gassing off. Wait a little while longer between coats.

Re: Teak Oil Wrinkles

Teak oil doesn't "wrinkle" it soaks into the wood without leaving a finish on the surface. Are you talking about varnish? Wrinkles usually happen when you apply successive coats before the previous coat has fully cured.

We’ve been using watco teak oil that does in fact leave a “finish”. It can easily wrinkle if too much is applied in rapid succession.

Re: Teak Oil Wrinkles

Hello, Mark Steinman,

Is this actually teak oil, or is it Cetol? Different products act differently.

Teak is an oily wood and repels many products that are put upon it. Not sure what the problem you mention is due to, but if you tell us the name of the product you used, and the interval between coats (compared to what is on its label) maybe the people here can help you figure it out.

Re: Teak Oil Wrinkles

Teak oil does not contain any oil or byproduct of the teak tree. It is simply named “teak oil” because it is marketed to be used on teak wood, just as “motor oil” is sold for use in a motor, and “baby oil” is for a baby’s butt. (No motors nor babies were injured in writing this post)

It is usually based on a mixture of linseed oil, varnish, and mineral spirits. Sometimes it contains a small amount of pure tung oil in the mix as well.

Boiled Linseed Oil can produce a very beautiful finish, but it does not protect the wood particularly well since it must be applied thinly, to prevent a wrinkling texture on the surface as it dries.
