Re: Vendors for 50ft power catamaran

I've recently got a quote from a boat builder, but found out that he may be taking me for a ride. i am now looking for alternative builders. please see attachment for what we are looking for. 50ft Power catamaran. Below are some requirements that we have.

We need an urgent quotation for a 50 foot catamaran customised according to our specific needs:

· Hull should be strong enough to withstand the demands of African coastal and offshore waters – what is your recommended spec?

· Livewells

· 60 litre fridge boxes on all four corners of the main deck layout

· Full airconditioning in every compartment/ cabin/ room

· Portable bed in the control room

· A smaller saloon area

· A solid fibreglass roof with closable or removable windows (may be canvas)

· Bottom end of the hull should be black or charcoal in colour

· Engine: Should be highly reliable unit but not too powerful (fast) should be able to reach speed of up to 12 knots cruising speed and have a fuel capacity which should enable the boat a range of 2 200 nautical miles.

· The bow deck should have a six person seat instead of 8

· At least an 11 KW genset generator, if possible, 15 KW

· Both engine rooms should be sound proof

· Hydraulic diving platform at rear of the boat

· The rubberduck/ dinghy should have an aluminium/steel/ iron hull to protect against bruising in rocky areas

· Showers must have doors so that the toilets don’t get wet after showering

· 4 bedrooms (2 smaller rooms with 2 single beds, 1 larger room with double bed, other larger room with 3 single beds – bunker bed if possible, otherwise a single beds would do)

Re: Vendors for 50ft power catamaran

I think you need to start with a Naval Architect - or buy off the shelf (plans or whatever a builder currently makes) - and customise from there.

Personally I would not even bother responding to a request with so few specs - apart from maybe sending a very vague (and non-binding!) quote, plucked from thin air using the power of a wet finger! Time is money - mine is, if not also yours.

Thank you all!

Do you perhaps know Luigi Innamorati from Andaman Boatyard?

How about expected weight
Expected displacement
Engine size
General layout (how many cabins, bathrooms and people will be generally on board)

Have a friend who is considering selling his 95' custom built all aluminum power cat. Much bigger than 50' but it is already built and he may be in a negotiable state of mind.

Re: Vendors for 50ft Power Catamaran

There are a number of cat builders in South Africa. Africat is one that comes to mind. I do not know their quality level, though. They do export the U.S..

This site has a long list of powercat builders and designers. I would tend to avoid the ones from countries without an estabished boat-building tradition, though... good cats are not the easiest boats to build.

I am a registered marine surveyor and have a very good impression of the craftmanship of Mr Innamorati. The surveys I have done at his yard were highly recommendable. I can also help you if you are looking for a builder in South Africa.
