For the $10K you spend in fuel cost to cross the pond, just learn to sail. My mom and dad cross the pond using less than 25 gal. The 6-8 people on a mid 40ft'er will be an experiment, better get a couple water-makers. Little out of your price range a cat is the only boat that provides enough room for 8 in that size. Guessing the rest of the crew aren't boaters, might charter a cat down south for 10-14 days. You're getting ready to make a huge lifestyle change. Good luck.

Maybe a stupid question but why Azores is allays reached from Bermuda not from Nova Scotia which is somewhat 1000nm nearer. Is it because of weather there or currents.
