Re: Just passed ASA 101 - Logbook Questions

For a while, we were recording marine bird sightings for a friend's data base, in the deck log mentioned above. For those, I used, the same format, i.e. lat/lon, time, and what it was, but used a different color ink, so it was easy to pick out that specialist information. Maybe someone can integrate this notion, too. Jim also keeps an engine log, and keeps track of our water fill-ups, and propane tank exchanges or fills.

Re: Just passed ASA 101 - Logbook Questions

Hi, in response to your questionabout lake sailing, the answer is yes it counts as sailing time as long as the oat you're sailing meets the uscg length minimums which I believe is 19 feet or more. Lake sailing counts as time sailed shorewards of the line of demarcation.

Re: Just passed ASA 101 - Logbook Questions

Ok, A legal vessel log must be bound, so no pages can be removed or added and the pages must be numbered when bound. It's the legal document part. This would be the daily vessel navigation log.
A maintenance log can be the same document but is often separate, particularly on inspected vessels, the Engineering Log.
The ASA log is a record of your certifications and experience for the ASA and is your resume for advancement in the ASA programs AND for CHARTERING.

Re: Just passed ASA 101 - Logbook Questions

@TheGoldenFleece

The primary purpose of the ASA Logbook is a place to record all of your certifications. Note that these are online in ASA's database too.

The sailing experience log in the back has no legal significance. It is just for your reference to record experience. A owner looking for crew or a charter base might be interesting in reviewing it. However, it is irrelevant for any liscensing or legal purpose.

For example, if you want to pursue a USCG liscense at some point then that sea time must be recorded on their official forms and signed by the boat owner or owner's agent. The ASA logbook is not accepted for this purpose.

Where it is relevant for liscensing is just as a memory aide to remind you who to contact to get sinature on sea service forms.
