Re: Online coastal navigation course

Greetings. I am preparing on my own to take the asa 105 test. Without putting too fine a point on things, how precise are the tests? On all of my exercises, I am pretty close but seemingly never exact. I.e. If the answer is 26degrees 9.05 I may end up with 26 degrees 8.9. I'll keep working at this, but is this precision good enough?

Its a bit of a judgement call by the instructor grading the test, but I usually use +/- 1° for bearings etc, +/- 0.1 kts for speed, +/- 0.1° for fixes. Given the scale of a 1200 TR chart and the usually less than ideal working environment I think thats reasonable. I also look at whether the student had a good understanding of what they were doing and review their chart work. If their answer was a little off, but their work was basically good then I give them partial credit on the question.

My preparation suggestions for 105:
