Registering boat in EU in Canada

Has anyone registered their boat in Canada (on basis of residence/citizenship etc)., but where the boat is, and will remain, in the EU (in my case, Spain)? The Spanish vendors of their Spanish-flagged boat have suggested it may be the best option.

Any tips welcome.

Gracias.

Fairly easy to do and you never pay Canadian taxes if/until the boats touches Canadian water.

There are some rules around the required tonnage measurement that may make it a bit more complex ...

Any vessel under 15 meters and not a catamaran, you can do the tonnage measurement yourself. they call it the "Simplified Tonnage Measurement Method".

Over 15 meters or a catamaran your will need to hire a Transport Canada Appointed Tonnage Measurer. If there is not one close to the boat find a local IMO Tonnage Measurer then call TC and ask if they will accept a measurement from an IMO Tonnage Measurer. They will most often accept this altho' there are no guarantees. You will have better luck with this request if you ask to speak to a "Ships Registrar" rather than the phone jockey who answers their 800 number.
