Change a Yamaha prop to Suzuki by changing the propeller hub?

I now own a 2021 Suzuki 9.9hp outboard which replaced a Yamaha 9.9hp from the year 2000. I also own 3 old Yamaha propellers. The old Yamaha props don't fit my new Suzuki because they use 8 spline teeth and the Suze uses 10 spline teeth.

Can I press out the Yamaha rubber hub and press in a Suzuki hub ( Suzuki part #58120-89L00, they call it a 'propeller bushing, a rubber mount with a 10 point shaft spline)), the Suzuki shaft might then be compatible and I can mount those Yamaha propellers on my new Suzuki engine.

Will that work? Has anyone done this? I have a 20 ton press I have used on automotive parts, any tips?

The old Yamaha hub bushing housing has an 'ID’ of 30 millimeter (I measured it with digital vernier calipers). Are 30mm ‘rubber barrel’ diameters on prop bushings a standard diameter for the 9.9s?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Change a Yamaha prop to Suzuki by changing the propeller hub?

Hirondeller

Having recently spun a Yamaha prop on my 8hp 2006 outboard, I do not think you can just change these over.

If the prop is similar to mine, you may be able to press out the spline, but the rubber part that fills in the space between the interior spline and the outside of the prop hub is the part that is designed to "break away" or spin free if you get the prop stuck in the mud, as I can attest. Once the prop is 'spun' the rubber part, while looking intact, will not provide torque at high rpms, as it has come apart. We had to idle back to the boat for a couple of miles and then get a new prop for the outboard.

If you pressed it out on the large press, I do not know if the hub would come out intact; enough to reuse. Also, pressing the Yamaha hub back into a Suzuki prop may be tricky as it could stretch or tear the rubber hub part.

Good luck on what ever you decide to do. Please let us know what you decide and how it works out.

Re: Change a Yamaha prop to Suzuki by changing the propeller hub?

Thanks 'Smokeys Kitchen'. I would not try to re-use any parts. The idea is to press out the Yam bushing and press in a new Suze part. But, the plan is dependent on the rubber bushing housings being the same diameter. I need to check my Suze. It is in a motor well and it is not easy to measure the housing down in there. It is a struggle to get the motor out. I might wait until I need a gear oil change.

I think the 'brand change' is technically possible because I have pressed out engine mounts on a car they had a steel center 'pipe' surrounded by rubber. The entire propeller hub should press out, not just the center spline. If there is rubber residue you can just clean it out and press in a new hub.

By the way I am aware that there is a hard plastic (not rubber) 'cartridge' system (installed with hand tools once the original rubber bushing/spline is pressed out), has anyone tried putting a cartridge into a 9.9hp?

Any prop specialists that can comment out there?

They could be the same prop and the rubbers are not that hard to change.
Big Merc props are even easier. Some rubber get moulded in real good. Take them to a prop shop they will tell you in 10

Re: Change a Yamaha prop to Suzuki by changing the propeller hub?

Check all of your prop dimensions first.Specifically hub diameter of the prop where it fits into the gearcase, also the distance of the bush housing from the front of the to press in the new bush prop .Next check bush housing inside diameter of both props Yam and Suz . If all of these match go for it . A 10 ton press is adequate to press the bushes out and in DO NOT reuse any of those bushes .When you press out the old bush do not sand the metal surface smooth if anything scour it a bit and rough up the surface . You will need a tapered guide to be able to press the new bush in but before you do soak the new bush in hot water for 10 minutes and lubricate it with epoxy glue . Making sure that you support the hub housing when pressing and do not let the prop take all of the force . When pressing the bus in slow and gentle does it.Good Luck.
