Cutlass bearing inside stuffing box

I've never replaced a cutlass bearing before, so bear with me. My boat has about a 6.5 foot long prop shaft with two cutlass bearings. The normal 5.5 inch long or so one at the end of the stern tube and a smaller one in the stuffing box. The stuffing box is threaded onto the stern tube which itself is bolted to a plate that is tabbed into the hull and holds it securely in place. There's only a few inches of prop shaft exposed before the prop, I have no strut. The stuffing box appears to be oversized from a standard one, presumably to allow room for the additional bearing?

The shaft is 1-3/8. I've cut and chiseled out the soft part of the cutlass bearing, but I can't work out how to get the rest of it out. In the attached picture, the closest set of threads are the threads to attach the stuffing box to the stern tube, then there appears to be a stop of some kind, then what looks like more threads. The second set of threads is where the cutlass bearing soft material was that I chiseled out. I can't beat it out from the other side because that's where the seat is for the packing.
