Cutlass bearing replacement

Hi everyone!
I'm going to replace cutlass bearing of my HR41 and don't know how to do it.
Should I remove propeller shaft?
Please give your advice.

Many thanks for advance.
Giho.

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement

It depends on whether your boat is equipped with a strut or not. If it is, there are companies who have equipment that can remove and replace the cutlass bearing without removing the prop shaft. On the other hand, if your boat has no strut, you’ll need to remove the prop shaft before you can get access to the cutlass bearing.

Good luck, fair winds and calm seas.

Well everyone tries without firstly. Some are successful and some are not, then its the prop out. I take our shaft out because the p bracket has a lip on the front which makes it difficult to get anything to slide against the bearing shell.

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement

I am facing the same job. A quick search reveals there is such a thing as a cutlass bearing replacement tool but it is not cheap. For roughly the same price, my yard will replace it.

I will keep the old bearing to use as collet for the next time (when I attempt make my own tool).

How did your replacement work out?

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement

I built a cutlass bearing puller for my boat. It really only works with 1" shaft but it works really well. Have lent it out locally to friends. Makes pulling a p bracket cutless a breeze. Anyone is welcome to it for shipping and a deposit.

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement

The HR41 is a bit of a *$&# when it comes to the bearing. You have to pull the shaft, and getting it past the skeg without grinding it to make room can be a challenge. Then basically have to use a sliding hammer to get the bearing out, or you can cut it laterally into two pieces.

I suggest you have a yard do it and watch the work to understand how to tackle it in future.

Why did you decide to replace the bearing?

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement

My blog post might help.

https://svsonora.wordpress.com/2018/...aring-removal/

If its standard through hull prop shaft, just remove prop, pound out with PVC pipe. But if it is like that, you can probably just pull out the shaft pretty easily, especially if you don't have to drop the rudder.

If it has a cutlass strut, you can probably do the same with PVC pipe after removing the prop.

That certainly looks heavy duty. If I were in the US, I would take you up on the offer.

I walked around the yard comparing others to mine...mine had the most play. And I now know why I experience vibration at RPM above 2000.
