Cuttless bearing

Hi,We have a inch and a quarter prop shaft and the old bearing needed replacement. All cuttless bearings in this size are 5 inches long but the bearing outer only accepts 4 inch length. The outfit I bought it off said to have it cut to size at a machine shop but I was considering leaving it with an inch sticking out as it doesn’t interfere with the prop.Is there a reason not to do this? Thanks Dave.

Meanwhile there is no advantage of leaving it longer. And You can just hacksaw it to be shorter.

On some boats the bit sticking out makes removal later somewhat easier. But yes, a hacksaw works just fine... no machine shop needed.

Re: Cuttless bearing

Wish I had taken a photo of it today. But that's must have been what happened on the yacht I surveyed this morning. The cutlass bearing was hanging out about an inch and the owner had attached the shaft anode to it instead of the shaft. It must have worked really well as the anode still looked like new and prop had some interesting pits.
Just hacksaw it off install it flush. Easy to do and you can just sand the raw edge to smooth it up.
Cheers

I both cut mine off and left some of it hanging out and drilled some holes through the bit sticking out so I can put a rod through the holes for something to hammer on in case I need to get it out again.

Re: Cuttless bearing

Is a hacksaw really the best way? What about a rotary pipe cutter? Cleaner, easier to get a perpendicular cut, but I'm unsure how it will work with the inside bearing material.

Hi Jim,

I'm going to machine a ring in two pieces with pins to clamp into the holes to give me something to bang on. The previous owners had epoxied the bearing in and it took me two days to trepan it out with tools I made out of hole saws. Never again.

Re: Cuttless bearing

The accepted minimum length for a prop shaft bearing is four shaft diameters ,if the cuttless is a bronze carrier leaving it longer is still a plus ,if it doesn’t interfere with the prop boss ,no real reason to cut it shorter,if the old shell is epoxyed in a good heat gun should free it up ,NOT a flame .⛵️⚓️

lol

team karst, are you a cave diver? Just wondering based on the name and location.

I personally would be concerned about having a ragged edge from the back and forth motion and the working of the internal bearing material that would cause. But, what do I know? lol
