Engine stops when put in gear with clunk

So I solved a really vexing and expensive problem. Three haulouts were needed but luckily the yard only charged for two.

After I had the shaft checked for straight and had to take off the Max Prop. I found a badly worn motor mount. Put everything back together. Back in the water I shifted into gear and the engine died with a CLUNK. Did it both fwd and back.

We rehauled out to check for propeller tangles. Clear.

Did an entire three-day weekend of troubleshooting in the water on the marine gear and fuel/engine stop solenoid. Nothing.

Then called Fred at PYI to ask about the possibility of putting the prop back together wrong. If that would stop a 110hp engine. He was the first person who said "Yes". So we hauled again.

In short; I had a 50:50 possibility of getting it right and I didn't.

There are very good instructions in the MaxProp install guide, but I couldn't find the critical hole to line the R/L marks up with on the cone gear originally. I was looking on the inside of the the wrong bronze piece. Moral: seek out the proper guiding marks on the shaft coupler and get it right.
