Help finding a Propeller

My boat partner recently hit something while he was out sailing and broke our prop. I'm having a hard time finding a replacement because of the length of the hub. The prop shaft extends only a couple inches past the strut, and the nuts that hold the prop on are at that point, deep inside the hub, about 10 inches in from where the prop blades are, so this long hub provides the extension that gives the prop clearance from the bottom of the hull. Anyone have any ideas where something like this could be found. I have searched pretty extensively on the internet and have not found anything, and the mechanics at our marina said they can get something custom made (but that's expensive). This is a 12 inch, 8 pitch prop.
Thanks

Re: Help finding a Propeller

frankly does not look like any prop i have ever seen. does look like it might have been a custom job originally

the location of the support strut...such a long way from the prop...is the problem.

maybe cost effective to use a standard prop (closer to the strut) and then cut an aperture into the skeg ?

cheers,

cheers,

Re: Help finding a Propeller

Hmmm it looks like a trailing log propeller. I’d pull the crack together with a couple of hose clips, vee it out and weld it, then blue it back to the shaft taper.

Re: Help finding a Propeller

Yeah, this one may have been a custom job - the previous owners repowered in 2006 so it is definitely not the original prop. I may have to just switch to a standard prop and deal with making the necessary modifications to make it work.

Figured I would ask here just in case anyone had seen this type of prop before, you never know.....
Thanks

Maybe a standard prop and a longer shaft?

It is not a "custom job." It is not a trailing log prop. It is an "Extendo Prop" and was designed to be used on boats repowered with diesel from the Atomic Four gas engine. No longer in production however.

Not enough clearance, A / found a similar prop, used or new B/ $$$ new shaft and prop.

Re: Help finding a Propeller

An option may be to get a new, longer shaft ......

Then...

Say you put on a sacrificial zinc anode, which is around 2.5" in lenght for your shaft, plus another 1/2" clear in front and behind, gives you around 3.5" before the new prop hub of a standard prop....puts the blades of your prop, maybe 5-6" behind the strut...??

which would then stop the prop hitting the strut when going forward, because the clearance looks way to small. Adding a rope cutter then becomes possible.

Re: Help finding a Propeller

Just a thought, and you would need to measure the distance between the aft end of the coupling and the stuffing box.
If sufficient clearance exists, the installation of a "Drivesaver" will get the end of the shaft to stick out further from the strut ~1".

Re: Help finding a Propeller

I expect that a longer shaft would require moving the strut. Not sure.

It may be possible to get a 4 blade prop with the diameter to sit right behind the strut. Will have more drag than the 2 blade. Depending on cost may be worth it to get a feathering 4-blade adjustable pitch.

Re: Help finding a Propeller

As it is shown now as per the pic above, the hub of that prop looks like it is immediately adjacent to the aft end of that strut, with almost zero clearance, meaning when the engine is put into forward gear, that prop is likely rubbing up against the strut.

If the prop had hit something, you'd likely see a bent blade, but I see none, which leads me to believe the crack in that hub location is likely the result of contact between the forward prop hub and the aft end of that strut.

As per above suggestion, it is possible to buy one of those flexible " drivesavers, inserted between the two flanges, which will push the shaft back by 1/2" or so.

I think it is possible to repair that prop by taking it to a shop that specializes and makes props. I know of such a shop in North Florida, but I'm sure others exist elsewhere.

This to me, is the best possible solution and likely the least expensive.
