Installing PSS, threaded stern tube

We are wanting to install a PSS seal to replace a old packing gland.

The old packing gland is threaded on to the stern tube and has a internal grease lubricated plastic/rubber bearing as part of the old packing gland. The stern tube has no bearing in it.

I foresee two options.

1. Have a fitting made that threads onto the stern tube with a new cutless bearing inside it. TThe bellows on the PSS clamp on to the outside.

2. Cut the old packing gland leaving only the part with the bearing in it, machine the outside to the correct diameter for the PSS bellows and fill in the hole where the grease went in.

Any thoughts on what the best way forward is?

All done now. Had make a bronze housed cutlass bearing that threaded onto the stern tube. pss bellows clamps onto that. the reason the forward bearing is needed in this case is the soft mounted 3cyl volvo...
