No split pin on prop nut.

Since there is no room for a shaft anode, I was hoping to add a prop nut anode ... but when I installed the nut, the thread isn't long enough for a split pin to go through the hole in the shaft ... this doesn't seem like a good thing.

Is this ok? am I going to lose my prop? should I just give up on the prop nut zinc idea?

I wouldn't trust it. Is that the same prop you've always had? I suspect you'll need to get a different prop.

Re: No split pin on prop nut.

The regular nut leaves room for a pin, but the special nut that takes the zinc doesn't.

looks like I'm stuck with my current zinc arrangement.

Not a great system at all, and yes it's likely you would lose the prop without the security of a pin.

Re: No split pin on prop nut.

Not only does the shaft anode not fit, but having the prop so far forward will cause performance issues.

I would install a drive saver or similar spacer to move the prop aft a bit. You will probably still need to install a thin small clearance anode, but it'll work much better.

Re: No split pin on prop nut.

I would consider taking the prop to someone that can machine sufficient off the BACK of the boss to allow the nut to do what you need it to, which would still give you the option to use the original nut, albeit with the addition of a washer to replace the machined portion.

Re: No split pin on prop nut.

We don't use split pins, but tab washers instead. The inner tab fits in the keyway grove and the outer edge of the tab bent over the nut.

The tab washers are commonly used with metric shafts. SAE sized shafts usually do not have the keyway machined down to the threads as needed for the tab washers.

I am not comfortable with the tab washers. I have seen three boats lose props that were secured with these. On two of these I personally know they were installed correctly. I have no idea why they failed, but I am glad my boat does not have them.

Re: No split pin on prop nut.

I have an imperial shaft 1" with 1:12 taper. It was replaced a couple of years ago and they supplied the brass nut and a few tab washers with it to match my prop.

Re: No split pin on prop nut.

my shaft is definitely machined for a pin and not a tab washer.

The consensus definitely seems to be "don't do it" ... so for now I've put the old nut back with a pin, and making sure the contacts are clean on the shaft brush that connects to a hull anode.
