Re: Painting Yanmar saildrive

I just found this

Yanmar Advisory Number: MSA2010-007
DATE: April 29, 2010
TO: All Marine Distributors, Dealers, OEM Boat Builders and End Users
SUBJECT: Saildrive Corrosion
MODEL: All Saildrive Models

....."When painting the saildrive and/or propeller care must be taken not to paint the sacrificial anode or the mounting surface under the anode. If the anode is painted or becomes insulated from the saildrive it will become ineffective"

The critical part is the "mounting surface" , too often relying on just the bolt hole can be problematic as you are inserting a stainless bolt into aluminum metal and the threads may seize, so people use Loctite or grease and so the bolt itself may be insulated and not work.

So when you hold the new part up against the SD does the ring area touch the sail drive or can you slide a piece of paper in the crack. I think with a two part split anode there is a gap.

Re: Painting Yanmar saildrive

I think I would use a zinc chromate primer. Like others have said make sure you have metal to metal contact with zincs.

On volvo 130S the whole surface under the Anodes are painted and on the screws are recommended to use Loctide 270. Still working fine.

@more
How long does the trilux last on the saildrive.
I have coopercoat on the hull but i need something on the saildrives that lasts as long as possible.
Mine are basically new Volvo 130S and i want to keep the original coating of volvo. Props are Flex-o-fold 3 blade.
Props with propspeed for now but open to alternatives...
