Repacking gland question

Hi, I want to repack my packing gland and I'm curious what the salt encrusted thing is in the picture? I'm assuming its an anode but I never see them on other people's boats, I already have one outside the boat, why does my boat have it there too?

Re: Repacking gland question

I believe it is an anode, but I think it is there not for andonic protection, but to act as a lock to keep your shaft from coming out should it get disconnected from the coupling.
Not a bad idea in my opinion.

Bingo. Some people buy purpose built stainless split collars, others use anodes.
