SPW prop antifouling

Hi!!

I´ve bought a SPW foldable propeller, and I´m thinking about the antifouling I should use.

I´m thinking about Velox, or any silicon type like Hempel silicone type.

What do you recomend?

Thank you very much!

You can. They should be primed first. But regular anti foiling paint isn't designed to adhere well or last long when applied to rapidly underwater metal parts that will be rotating rapidly.

Propspeed is the best product of its kind, IMHO

I use a small tin of hard antifoul on my prop. Prime it first with an etch primer. If you use soft anti foul it comes off within weeks if not days.

Re: SPW prop antifouling

I have had good results using Velox in UK waters. Good preparation is needed.

Just interested if you have seen any results for Pellerclean by Seajet?

I’m in Australia so I’ll be using a small Propspeed kit for my next job now that we can do it ourselves, but I understand that Pellerclean if your in Europe is a third of the cost. Mavs on Sail Life recently used it.

Never heard of it, never seen it in use (to my knowledge.) But to my mind, cheap isn't good and good isn't cheap.

Thank you for that response. Propspeed is even more expensive in Mexico and can't be imported without a permit (customs stops items like this at the point of importation). It is available locally (imported through a licensed importer) at about twice the already high price.

So I am going to prime the prop and put on regular anti fouling. At least from your answer it doesn't seem like it's going to make the blades fall off.

Re: SPW prop antifouling

I made up some home-brew PropSpeed stuff for trial. Simply hardware store silicone sealant (cheapest brand available) thinned to brushing consistency with epoxy thinner. Painted onto some bits of sheet metal with no primer. flowed out nice and smooth, looks and feels like the real thing and h as lasted several months sitting on a bench. In the long run I was not brave enough to put it on the prop, mostly due to the high cost of slipping to change it out if unsuccessful.

I planned to use a conventional etching primer, followed by a single coat of the goo. May get around to a more conclusive test some day... like maybe on the dinghy o/b, although that prop is painted aluminium rather than bronze.

I find it hard to justify the high price of Propspeed and its offshoots, but perhaps I am missing some important info. Corporate greed seems possibly involved!

Same here and whilst its expensive, we are still using the same small tins we bought perhaps 5 years ago.

Re: SPW prop antifouling

Did a dive on our monster prop and rudder today
Bare bronze and bugger all miles done

Did a huge amount of prep work including acid wash, several coats of primer before antifoul and all for nought.

Would love to try proposed but have been told our prop spins to slow to be effective
Plus $$$ in materials alone would be a substantial outlay.

Marine engineers who do props, shafts etc for mainly superyachts and commercial vessels who also sell and apply propspeed who checked over our bearings, shaft and prop

And a marine corrosion specialist (electrical, anodes, coatings) who also sells propspeed, who checked us out for current leakage/over anoding.

Well, I can tell you I’ve seen it used very successfully on many boats much larger than yours. But it’s your dime.
