Re: Twindisc TMC40M - what tranny oil?

Either Ford or GM types of ATF are available. In a marine environment I would look for a universal synthetic type.

The gear in your tugboat is related to a tmc40 by name only.

Re: Twindisc TMC40M - what tranny oil?

No, mate. They're the same thing. the diagram shows draining "oil" out the bottom, whatever type it may be. Twin Disc makes all kinds of industrial transmissions and they usually specify some type of Auto Tran Fluid (sometimes a vehicle manufacturer may have a branded oil product).
Just get a good quality, name brand ATF and you'll be fine. It will have the required gear and bearing lubricating, anti foaming and, most importantly, anti corrosive, additives in it. Should not need any aftermarket additives. Do not overfill as this will cause foam to develop, inhibiting its' performance.

Re: Twindisc TMC40M - what tranny oil?

The process of writing their manuals at Twin Disc must be a lot like watching a room full of blind people making a pot of chili. This topic is a frequent hit on all the forums. Nice to have peeps with real world experience sharing good info.

I'll second that. The manual is in five languages - I'm fluent in two of them and can follow along in a couple of others, and from what I see there's no one that's better than the others.

Re: Twindisc TMC40M - what tranny oil?

Just for the amusement of the gallery I'll post the final outcome. Someday I'll learn not to worry about stuff like this until I can get the real information.

Finally got to the boat today, crawled into the engine room to check the tranny, and discovered that the manual I was given was for an entirely different make / model.

I in fact have a Tuff Torq made by Kanzaki, and the ID tag clearly states that it uses SAE 30 oil.
