Volvo 120SE sail drive corrosion

Hello everyone. New guy to the forum here. I have a 1987 Sweden Yachts 340 with a Volvo 2030 engine with a 120SE sail drive. The sail drive case is badly corroded. I can get just the case and have a mechanic swap the innards out (about $2500). I am wondering if maybe I should just replace the the entire lower portion of the sail drive (about $5000+). Crazy expensive parts! Does anyone have any experience with this and can give me some guidance, information, etc.? I'm in NE USA. Thank you!

...so feeling your pain!!!

I'm in Cali boat shopping, hiking (something landlubbers do) enjoying vertical elevation gains versus the flatness of Florida, even some farming! But mostly boat shopping is the mission.

I went to investigate a Finnish boat a Targa 96...has a ceased yanmar with same very sail drive system I believe which seller described as "corroded"

Did a little Internet searching targa 96s and found a forum where people were discussing this very boat and described it as derelict. Saying another free boat that wasn't worth salvaging much less restoring...

So glad I never looked at the boat after you threw out the numbers of fixing a corroded sail drive body yikes!!!
