Re: Volvo MD17C/(?gearbox?)

Yes and it does not squeal upon a cold start, only a warm start. But it will squeal when the gearbox is in neutral. That part doesn't make sense if the cones are disengaged. Correct me if I'm wrong here but I'm picturing two cones, one fitting inside the other. The larger one with a clutch lining on the interior (mating) surface and the smaller one a smooth, machined, metal surface.

Yep. Since the box sits exactly under my feet I know when we are in reverse or neutral - pretty practical much as I am not certain why the sound is there.

The oil is pristine clear every 100 hours when I change it, so it is not likely any mechanical damage (?). The box has had at least 800 hours on it with the sound as a permanent fixture.

Re: Volvo MD17C/(?gearbox?)

Well the good news is that the squeal WAS just the alternator belt. I changed the oil in the gearbox as well but I couldn't get 20W30 as per the manual recommendations so I used a dexron atf.
I am still getting the propellor turning under sail though. Even when the gearbox is left in reverse. It doesn't happen all the time but I don't like it, not one little bit.

I know the transmission for my MD17C is a rebuilt, but do not know which type/model. Can anyone tell me what the gear ratio might be? Submit here or to basilva12 "at" yahoo "dot" com

Here is what the motor originally was equipped with:
http://www.capedory.org/manuals/Volv...verse_gear.pdf

The reduction rate stated is 1.91:1.

I have this engine with a saildrive and still learning myself.
