What transmission is on my Perkins 4.108?

Here's a picture. What kind of oil does it use, and how much?

Probably a good idea to clean it on the outside. (And fuel/filter on the inside)
A data plate may show up under all the grime, fluid leaks and cracks may show up as well. No negatives in keeping clean machinery.

It's a Hurth Transmission. Dipstick on left side of shaft. Has fluid level on stick.

Yes, cleaning the whole engine/transmission is one of my next projects. I've seen the dipstick; I was just asking how much oil it uses because the engine is tilted back pretty significantly, and the dipstick marks may not be accurate. What kind of oil does a Hurth use?

Re: What transmission is on my Perkins 4.108?

My Borg Warner transmission has dipstick on the left as well and looks very similar. Try and determine which it is and you can find the manuals for each. Some swear by using same engine oil in the tranny but can also use atf as well but will depend on your name once you determine that. What boat is it in, that might help determine which it is as I’ve seen Perkins with BW, Kanzaki and hurth so you really should verify before dumping anything in there but chances are they all use similar fluids but good to double check. Oh and your serial plate is in the same place as mine up by the hx ad same colour if I’m fact that is it.

Looks more like a Borg Warner 71 or 72. Probably 71 as its return line is where yours is shown.

Take a look at the pics here Borg I had a really hard time ID'ing mine as the plate was gone. BW use type F transmission fluid. I have several different manual on my blog.

That transmission is a Borg Warner velvet Drive with 1:1 ratio.
It uses ATF.

Yeah, it does look a lot like the pictures. Nice manual. Thanks.
