Yanmar saildrive cooling problem after launch.

A friend has a Seawind 1160 with 2 Yanmar 30's with saildrives. When she relaunches after a haulout or refloats after beaching, the starboard engine produces no raw water in the exhaust. To get it to function, she has to back flush the leg. the other engine works properly. She has tried closing the needle valve before the boat dries out, but that didn't help.

Used to happen at times on my Lightwave 38 with same engines/drives. Would eventually be good.

Re: Yanmar saildrive cooling problem after launch.

My guess is that the pump housing is worn on that side and can't clear the air out of the line. Air being much less viscous than water can more easily get around the sides of the impeller when the housing is worn. It's often only the cover plate in these circumstances that is causing the problem. This is especially a problem if the hose and strainer have any part above the pump that can trap an air bubble that eventually gets sucked into the pump.
