Re: Bilge Pump hits neighbor

The sump is in the bilge cause she’s a little boat with a lot of competition in it’s day.
It will be a nice upgrade. You still need an eyelid on discharge.

+1 on the flat fender, easy to deploy when needed and has multiple uses.

Easy to add a discharge pump like this (similar but different than Bill's below) and add a thru hull above the waterline with a high loop in the discharge hose. Only drawback is needing a manual switch but I prefer that over adding a sump/switch.

Here is a brief video of it in action...

For future consideration- as also mentioned by Madehn, above- do yourself a favor and divert the shower waste away from the bilge. [It will become a mess- based upon personal experience in a past vessel rigged the same way...]

Those mini shower sumps are also a mess, requiring routine mucking and investment in float switches every couple of years. We replaced both of our sumps with Whale IC pumps to drain our showers [and primary bilge pump too...]

FWIW

Cheers! Bill

Bilge Pump hits neighbor

My last boat was built in 1989 and had huge deep bilge sumps and yes the showers discharged into them. This arrangement has long since died out.

Atwood makes nice shower sump , pump and filter box fit it and the problem is solved

A wife and two daughters generated yucky bilges let me tell you. One day it nearly flooded the the aft cabin. The Atwood went in the day after.

The current boat directly pumps the shower out by a dedicated shower pump. I clean the filter of hair every Sunday without fail!!!

Re: Bilge Pump hits neighbor

My personal preference is to pump shower water overboard through a Whale Gulper or similar. Put it on a manual switch. They can run dry, so turn it on when you get in the shower, turn it off when done. And the gulper will pump hair and other small debris just fine, so you don't need an inline filter. Which means there's nothing to clean and it's a simple, low maintenance, low smell solution.

Drape a towel over the outlet when needed.
Check your bilge for diesel before taking a shower.

Install a "clam" over the thru-hull fitting to direct the water downward.

Agreed. That's what I meant by diaphragm pumps back in post #10. They can run dry, and they get all the water, soap, hair, etc out. Nothing sitting around in the bilge stinking, and no crudded-up shower sumps to clean out.

I got rid of one of mine, a big, old, belt-driven thing with an arm which pumped the diaphragm up and down. I thought a new, shiny, ready-made shower sump would be an upgrade. Now I wish I'd kept the old pump.
