Check this tech out.

Think I'll hold off buying a watermaker for a while. Interesting but, we often hear about alot of green snake oil that never gets beyond the press releases. But, we can hope.

This invention, if refined enough to become practical, has staggering implications for all humanity. An efficient, low-cost low-energy means of producing potable water from seawater ranks nearly with cold fusion.
And yes, possibly a handy way for sailors to produce fresh water while at sea.

I read about this a couple of years, which I think means that no progress is being made. Probably means it isn't as great as it sounds.

Your wait will be infinite. Yes, Lockheed is up to some sort of deception or just outright stupidity (Shocker that!). The energy consumption of desalination cannot be reduced by 100. There is a fundamental energy required to pull the water away from the salt. It cannot be reduced below 0.75kW-h per cubic-meter of product. The literature indicates that big commercial systems run at better than 50% efficiency. My little Spectra with energy recovery pump is about 25% efficient. Plain pump marine watermakers might be about 10% efficient.

Another article.

Hey, maybe it's the real deal. The bottomless, no-questions-asked funding for military boondoggles is starting to dry up, so defense companies like Lockheed Martin have to start playing their other cards, I guess.

Sounded to good to be true. Desalinization technology, even in its current form, still has enormous benefits to many areas of the world, and improving that technology should be a high priority. Among yachties, I understand the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club uses a desalinization plant at its outstation/marina at Silva Bay to supply water to the entire facility.
