After thru hull fitting flange has set up for a few days, clean the threads with a wire brush, attach valve for a few turns to ensure it wont cross thread. If no issues, take it off, wrap threads twice with teflon tape then carefully attach the valve body.
+1 You asked about coating threads. Use teflon tape, no leaks and easy to remove if you have to service the valve for any reason. You're trying to seal the threads not permanently glue things together. I've never had a leak with the teflon tape.

Being from the old school, [wood boats] i put a "neck tie", caulking cotton around the flange, saturated with paint, and screw down, never leaks, and easy to remove when needed.

Re: Caulk the threads on a thru hull fitting or not?

Dear Original Poster. Groco is my personal choice as well. Very intelligent move. Which Groco? Are you screwing it into an adaptor plate like they do on the web page you mentioned...then how are you securing the backup to the hull.
I just need more information but in general I like 5200 for the job.

My manatee boatbuilding friends have asked me to type for them.
The manatettes (female manatees)were furious over the “real men “ comments. They have an open tube of PLEXUS which they threaten to use on the next poster who thinks boatbuilding is a boys only club. Plexus makes 5200 look like white paste in kindergarten. They’ve been drinking beer all day with the orcas. Yikes.
Happy trails to you
Captain Mark and his suffragette manatettes

Re: Caulk the threads on a thru hull fitting or not?

On my previous boat I used 5200. I had a ball valve seize and during which I broke the handle. I had a plug pounded in on the outside and replaced the ball valve with no worry about the thruhull moving. My new boat has an unknown sealant and with my seized raw water intake valve(open), I will not do this move as I fear a sealant failure.
