This Swedish LPG guide is similar to UK BSS, & is the common & acceptable guide for EU.

BSS guide : https://www.boatsafetyscheme.org/med...de%20chap7.pdf

ABYC is the guide for North American built boats

All 3 of the guides-SE,BSS & ABYC are very similar regarding the "bucket style" LPG locker with overboard gas drain.

You stated in the old post your plan to build a larger, safe LPG locker.
I assume from this post that you have built the new larger locker & it is all good, except some water splashes up the drain hose & into the locker when pounding into head seas.

My questions:

1. What harm is this water doing?
2. Does the water drain back out as soon as the bow lifts again?
3. Is the drain skin fitting(thru hull) thru the stem or thru the side of hull?

Photos would be helpful.

Cheers, yeah, I've improved it. Forgot about the other post.

Before the hole wasn't in the bottom and this and that so there was a pool of water. But you're right, it was probably draining as it was just a little water in the bottom of the bucket I used to have for the 2 kg Campinggaz bottles.

Now using 5 kg Composite bottles and bigger container. Haven't yet drilled the hole in the container. I cannot drill it at the absolute bottom if I want the hole to be above the draining hole.

So I guess I have to live with water in the bottom of the bucket.

I am considering installing a gas alarm inside the container also, half way up the wall maybe.

The draining hole in the hull is approx 60 cm above the waterline.

The black in the lower part of the image is where the waterline is:

This is on the port side of the boat, near the stern.

The old container:

Previous owners did this, not me!
Some old-timers here think this is perfectly adequate! It resided on a shelf that I've removed using a saw.

The new container:
WILL UPDATE - I got help from a plastics Company.

The 5 kg bottles - new for us:

I could drill a another hole in the hull, say 40 cm above the waterline. Might get too much water through though? And what if we're leaning = going headwind for days, and suddenly the propane bottle starts leaking.

The original hole, I could use it for a second bilge pump I am installing.

If I was to put he propane bottle in the anchor locker at the bow, I would have to install new copper lines all the way to the stove, and also to a new BBQ I bought, that we'll mount on the arch on the stern.

We have 60 m of chain in that anchor locker as well. I could rebuild and make the chain go down under the forepeak bunk. And open up for gas leaking that way.

Too much labour involved. Ain't got the time nor the money.

Is there a best effort solution here maybe.

Many old-timers over here think the solution we got is ok.

The photos help. Have I got this correct?

1. You are using a plastic bucket for a " LPG tank locker".
2. This bucket has a hole at or near the bottom?
3. The photo shows the old bucket sitting on top of a hatch. What is under the hatch?
4. Could you run a drain pipe/hose out thru the transom at a point low enough that the pipe/hose would have no sags & would slope downwards for it's full length?

The whole principle of a "propane tank locker" is :
1. Catch any gas that leaks from the tank, tank valve, regulator, bubble leak detector, solenoid valve, and all hoses, piping & fittings that are located in the tank locker.
2.Drain,by gravity, any gas directly overboard WITHOUT restriction.

The tank locker is recommended to be made of "strong" material that will support & protect the tank & accessories from physical damage. It should have a 1/2 hr fire rating.to allow some time to extinguish an external fire before said fire reaches the gas tank. A plastic bucket is questionable IMHO.

Most of us work to a budget. But we have a responsibility to others to be as safe as possible.

Cheers/ Len
