Re: Common DIY Water Maker Mistake...don't let it happen to you.

Muchas Gracias Rich!
appreciate your info very much!
Probably we go for the Jabsco SS pump and hope they use a suitable stainless for seawater which lasts a couple of years.
Cheers

But since the second pressure vessel adds in 50% more fresh water production:
The SM30 makes it's 33GPH using 33Watts/Gallon of water

So the Dual pressure vessel water maker is 37% more efficient in the energy use per gallon of fresh water...but...if your No 1 criteria out of a water maker is energy used per gallon of water produced, then this is somewhat of a pointless exercise. Spectra blows away these numbers...no competition!

Since the operational mindset and general philosophy of an "energy hog" piston pump water maker is to make as much water as you can while your ships generator is running, to me what drives the value of adding the second Pressure Vessel and RO Membrane is the 50% increase in fresh water production. That translates into 50% less generator run time for the same amount of water or just having more water to use for those who have generator run times greater than those needed just for water making.

The other argument in favor of the dual membrane water maker is redundancy. Because if one of your two membranes were to fail while out cruising in the middle of nowhere then you can easily reconfigure the system to run on one pressure vessel. So your cruise doesn't end from lack of water.
Hi Rich, and old post, but a fresh thank you from me for helping me understand this really important distinction. I feel like I've had an epiphany.

My goal is to make water from solar, so I now realise that building a system with a pressure intensifier (Clark pump) seems the only way. Is there someone that makes an off the shelf pressure intensifier for 50-100 litre per hour system?

Re: Common DIY Water Maker Mistake...don't let it happen to you.

Folks, if you need a water maker just buy one from Rich. I bought the 30GPH system from him three years ago. Every time I called with a question Rich answered the phone and gave me great advice. This is not any kind of DIY project in my opinion, because if your water maker fails it could cause you serious problems.

Great post Rich, BTW. I am not affiliated with Rich in any way, just a VERY satisfied customer.

Cheers, Bill

Now note, if you want to be able to run on a Honda EU2000i OR a 2000W inverter, you can't go larger than a 1.0Hp motor.

.[/QUOTE]

Rich, I'm curious about the statement you made above. The Honda EU2000 is rated at 1600 watts continuous output. One HP is 746 watts, so two HP would be 1492 watts. I get the start "surge", but at 2000 watt output (transient), the Honda puts out 2.68 hp. I can run a 2 hp pressure washer (no soft start kit installed) all day long with my Honda EU 2000. Is it recommended? That's another question.

It seems to me that especially with a soft start kit like RV'ers use for their AC units, a Honda should run a 2hp water maker electric motor just fine. What am I missing?

This is where so many DIY-ers screw up and blow money.
A 1.0hp motor is 1100w not 746w...real life vs calculations.

Nope...
There is no such animal as an off the shelf energy recovery pump, which is why Spectra and Schneker get to charge their boat buck price premium. Your only hope here is to find a used spectra for their Clarke pump.

Re: Common DIY Water Maker Mistake...don't let it happen to you.

Damn it. I was looking forward to building my own watermaker... Now I gotta spend almost twice as much and still install it myself...lol...guess I start saving and the watermaker goes into the 2021 upgrade list instead of the 2020

Thank you for all the solid info, Rich - probably saved me massive headaches.
