Diesel hot water

Has anyone got a diesel hot water system working? (webasto style)

I'm thinking 5kw diesel heater, pump and storage tank style, as I can't see instantaneous being effective.

Comments / thoughts?

Re: Diesel hot water

I have a Webasto air furnace but seriously considered the water type before choosing to go with air. I liked that since the heat was transported via a hose much smaller in diameter than the hot air ducting, routing the hoses would be a lot easier. But the water type requires a loop so twice as many holes, though smaller in diameter. I’d also have to run wires to each outlet location. The water type is more expensive too and there’s more to the installation. The air type allows you to supply the heater with cold, dry air from outside the boat, thus helping to rid the boat of moisture. I also assumed but never verified that total electricity consumption would be higher with the water type heater because it requires both a water circulator pump and a fan for each outlet in addition to the energy needed for ignition. So.... I did a lot of head scratching and figured out how to best route the air ducting in order to get heat everywhere I wanted it. But I think the water based system probably has advantages I haven’t thought of so hopefully you’ll hear from them to help with your choice. Good luck!

Re: Diesel hot water

Hurricane Zephyr on-demand hot water from diesel. Works great, no storage tank or calorifier.

Re: Diesel hot water

You can buy a 12v diesel water heater, comes with a pump. About $450.

Similar to the Chinese diesel air heaters. Used by big trucks to supply heat and keep the engine warm when parked.

Re: Diesel hot water

I run a Eberspacher Hydronic 10.5KW for heating and hot water. The heating and HW are valved to allow either or both. Takes about 20-30mins for 44ltr tank.

I am not sure if heating a smaller tank would be an issue due to insufficient heat transfer.

Anyone else with a similar set up and a smaller calorifer care to comment?
