Engine driven watermaker

Looking at a watermaker that is powered via the engine vs. an electrical motor. Curious if anyone has gone this route and is willing to share thoughts.

Re: Engine driven watermaker

I have a 4108 running a generator. I had a high pressure pump off the pulley and a clutch. I saw it causing the same problem as running a generator with a light load - glazing cylinders. I went back to a motor run pump.

Re: Engine driven watermaker

You could use a bigger pump and more membranes and double the load whilst halving the run time.

Re: Engine driven watermaker

I have considered something similar. At least in the range of engines that would be in the size range of boats I would likely have, i.e. 25-50hp.

Having a water-maker and a large alternator, and using the engine to charge the batteries and make water at the same time. 1 to 2 hours a day ? Seems like it would give you plenty of both, 2 birds with stone yeah ?

Or still not enough load ? Maybe add an engine driven compressor for holding plates too ?

Maybe someone should design a stand alone with all 3. That would probably suit a lot of cruisers most basic needs. Water, battery and refrigeration. What would the be HP requirement ?

Just thinking out loud....

Here is a link to download a copy of the Cruise RO Engine Driven Water Maker manual form We Transfer:
https://we.tl/t-9EcpzgSzlu

It will give you a good feeling about the system and layout.

The hardest thing about and engine driven system is fabricating the mount so that the Hp Pump can be mounted to the Engine. It isn't a back-yard shade-tree welder type of project or you could be setting yourself up for bracket welding repair jobs all along your cruising route. (Ask me how I know from both client and personal experience!)

Cheers
