Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

Have you tried to find out who, made, the original sink, and if they are still in business? Another option is to look for a hurricane damaged totaled boat that is like yours and see if you can buy parts from the insurance company.

Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

Hi Rowglide,

Found mine at Walmart. A simple rubber plug for $1.99 CAD. It works great.

Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

Well thanks for the suggestions of the obvious.
Yes, I could get by with a rubber mat or plug. Anybody using rubber mats at their kitchen sink at home? No? Why not?
I prefer a proper sink basket in the galley, hence this thread.

I think I'll go with an easier solution for me (don' have access to any dies)
First I'll see if they are available in the UK when I am there in October (lots of different from North American sized stuff over there).
Failing that, I think I'll buy the oversized baskets with the right post and rubber seal, then get one of my smarter than me pals to print up the baskets on a 3D printer.
Or ultimately someone will read this thread and say "Hey I know where to buy those..."

Jim,
As I read it your basket strainer (metal parts) are still OK. So 3D printing the plug is easy, especially if you have another that you can use to provide exact dimensions to the mm or even better tolerances. See
HTML Code:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:759335
as an example. Yours would be deeper as per your photos. Just measure the inner and outer diameters and height and take to you 3D printer mates. They will have to CAD and then 3D print in flexible material. I'f they are not up to it, PM me with the dimensions and I'd be happy to print one for you in 3 weeks when I near my printer again. (New challenges are fun- I have flexible print material but have not yet had a project to try it on)

Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

I should mentioned I replaced mine due to a seized and leaky drain assembly. Rubber stopper would not have helped. If you’re just after a basket then the $5 rubber stopper is ideal.

Thanks, I didn't know you could get a flexible material. That would be ideal. I'll see if my tech savvy friend has the right material for his printer.

Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

My leaky basket strainers are also apparently made from unobtainium and there is no way that I am going to change out or modify the opening of my deep double sink which is a lot thicker metal and deeper than most replacement sinks. The basket is a discontinued item according to the boat yard in Taiwan that made my Tayana 37. I haven't put digital calipers on the basket yet, but it is most likely the same that is being referred to as a 2 3/4" diameter, though I think it is a 72 mm, which puts it closer to 2 13/16". The plug diameter is 45 mm and tapers to 42 mm, and of course, the problem is that the plug no longer seals. I tried a high quality silicone glue to build up the diameter of the plug, but it still leaks. However, reading this thread from other disgruntled contributors like myself, has given me a better way for applying the silicone glue: dry the contact surface of the sink and thinly coat it with Vaseline petroleum jelly to keep the silicone from adhering to it, and then apply a generous amount of silicone to the plug and insert it with a small amount of weight on top of the center stem of the basket. A wrench socket on the stem to raise the height and on top of that, placing a copy of Jimmy Cornell's "World Cruising Routes" will probably be about the pressure right amount of pressure.

Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

Have you considered just reusing the SS basket and stealing the soft parts from a normal hardware store one? would that work?

Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

Part of my problem is I have 3 sinks that use the same basket, and only 1 basket. Id be happy with 2.

Looks just like an everyday kitchen sink drain plug basket strainer, only smaller.
I must be looking in all the wrong places. Tried RV sites, boat sites....
Any ideas?
Have you ever considered having a new rubber seal made? What is finished?

PM me, I might have one or two of the original baskets kicking around. Might even have the one good drain assembly. Use plumbers putty to seal the drain assembly to the sink.

Re: Finding drain plugs.... for sinks (galley)

Nice try! You get an E for effort, but that item is for a standard 2 1/4" bathroom sink assembly. We are discussing a size in-between that size and that of a standard 3 1/2" kitchen sink basket.

Hello RBK. That sounds great! Being relatively new to the Cruiser's Forum, how do I communicate with you via our emails?
