Galley stove

Currently have a CNG two burner stove on my Bristol 32. Works great, but only used about six times per year. Refilled tank only one time. Thinking of possibly switching to an alcohol stove and eliminating the heavy tank. Propane doesn't seem like a good selection for our use.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Galley stove

When you do use the stove, are you at dock, underway or at anchor? If at dock, you might want to consider a hot plate. If underway or at anchor, have you looked into camp stove options? Or better yet, a rail mounted BBQ with 1 lb propane stored properly.

Re: Galley stove

I had a boat with a non-pressurized alcohol stove and it was a toy. You would have to start cooking dinner an hour or two after lunch if you wanted to actually cook something.

You have a system that works, why change it? What will you gain from switching?

There's a current thread where some folks are talking about how dangerous propane is. They are wrong, properly installed and maintained, it is perfectly safe. We love our propane range so if you have a compelling reason to replace your CNG system, I urge you to consider propane. Just make sure it is all installed according to ABYC specifications and that the appliances meet the requirements for use on a boat.

Origo was the major marine alcohol stove maker, but I think they have stopped production. You can probably find them on the used market though.

I've used both alcohol (pressure) and propane systems. Both worked fine, although propane is much easier and more efficient.

Re: Galley stove

Thanks to all for your advice. I do have a rail mounted Magma and for the present I think I will stay with the CNG system down below. Thanks again.
