Head Not Emptying After Installing New Pump

Hello All,
I recently installed a new Jabsco Quiet Flush pump on our main head. Ever since the installation the head empties very slow The motor runs, water revolves around the bowl counter clockwise, but it empties very slow. Any input and or suggestions on how to get it to run properly would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Head Not Emptying After Installing New Pump

If it's a sea water toilet, somebody may have flushed a wet wipe or something else that's clogging the pump or macerator blade. Have you put a volt meter on it to see if it's getting a full 12 volts (or 24...whatever it needs). Volt meter needs to be used WHILE FLUSHING.

If you rule out the toilet, it may be seawater mineral buildup in the toilet discharge line. Or a partially blocked holding tank vent that's creating back pressure. (You can rule that out if you're flushing directly overboard).

You might want to see if the owners manual/instructions offer any help...if not, Jabsco's toilet guru is Paul Campagna...his direct line is 978.282.5246

Re: Head Not Emptying After Installing New Pump

We had a similar situation. Changed the joker valve and then the motor would run, water would swirl in the bowl but not empty. It was due to mineral buildup in the discharge line. Removing and flexing the hose caused some of the mineral buildup to break away from the hose wall and cause a blockage further down the hose. We tried several things to clear the hose unsuccessfully and ended up changing the hose.

Liming II, you have been blessed with advice from Peggy Hall, the Princess of Poop, the author of The Book on smelly boat sewer systems, and a confirmatory personal comment from dougweibel. Consider yourself most fortunate.

Re: Head Not Emptying After Installing New Pump

A dose (if the buildup is severe, it may require 2) of muriatic acid (read and FOLLOW! all directions for safe handling!)--available from any hardware store--will dissolve mineral buildup in hoses ...a weekly cupful of distilled white vinegar--available from supermarkets-- will prevent it.

Same instructions apply to using both: flush all the way through the system in the "dry" mode (close intake thru-hull if you have an electric toilet that doesn't have a "dry" option)...follow with at least a quart/liter of clean FRESH water after 45-60 minutes. Never leave vinegar sitting in the bowl...soft rubber--joker valve-- left to sit and soak in vinegar will swell and distort.

Re: Head Not Emptying After Installing New Pump

Thanks for for the good words and for mentioning my book (see link in my signature, just click on the title). Its title (my publisher's idea) is a bit misleading...'cuz although it does deal with every source of odor on a boat and how to cure, or better yet PREVENT 'em, it's actually a comprehensive "marine toilets and sanitation systems 101" manual that explains the laws, describes all the types of systems and how they work, and will help you learn how to operate and maintain your system to prevent 99% of problems instead of having to cure 'em. 'Cuz you get to do any preventive maintenance on your terms when it's convenient...the need to cure a problem never happens when it is!

And I'm always glad to answer questions and try to solve problems.
