Also, terrible smells can be caused by your raw water feed hose to the head. It will be especially bad if left for a few days in a warm climate. My aft head has a 10 ft feed hose connection to the through hull. In the summer it is a veritable petri dish for foul smelling organisms. I solved this by making a 2" connection "T" into a clorinator with swimming pool tablets. One part is connected to the feed line with a reducer, another to the head and the third is fitted with a screw cap. It allows a 1/2 a chlorine tablet to be inserted into the "manifold" When you flush the tablets add chlorine to the head and some of it back flows down the feed line to keep it smelling sweet.
