How do I avoid "discharging oil"?

This statement caught my attention, since Washington State is planning to make Puget Sound a No Discharge Zone in the near future. I went back and read the proposed legislation, and as I thought, the NDZ designation applies only to sewage (treated or not), not greywater. Whew!

Soap and body oil will rot a wood boat. I don't know why, but in repairing many boats, I replaced many ribs and planks near a shower drain or where the water settled. Also it will create unwanted smells.
It's not hard to avoid pumping oil residue from the bilge. I have pans under my engines and leave an oil absorbing snake in the engine room bilge.

I keep oil absorbent pads permanently under my engine with a pan separate from the bilge. I have absorbent snakes in the bilge as well. I have not seen any "sheen" in my rarely pumping bilge. If you can't afford $1 an absorbent pad how are you going to afford an oil change?

Re: How do I avoid "discharging oil"?

Firstly, your shower should not be dumping into the bilge, it should go into a seperate container with a bilge pump, and then pump overboard, the engine should have a pan under, if not enough room, use oil absorbent pads, and there is a company in washington that sells a filter, that will filter oil out of bilge water, it's no joke, if the coast guard catches you dumping oil, even a small amount, the fine is HUGH, that's why, if you look at a insurance policy, the amount for oil spill coverage, is many, many times more than all else, they can fine you and attach your income, WITHOUT any court order.

One way to deal with contaminated bilge water is the use of the cheapest pampers you can find. Amazing absorption capacity. Dispose on land,

Don't pump oil into the water. Figure the rest out so the boat complies.

Re: How do I avoid "discharging oil"?

My marina gives you oil absorbing pads free. I have no oil leaks newly rebuilt Yanmar.
Most marinas have showers that are clean and hot. For bathing when traveling use a small bucket of warm water and a wash cloth, do a final rinse in the cockpit. I would never use the shower in my boat, Pearson 30, it drains into a very shallow bilge and I do not have fresh water to waste.
