How long does your HVAC compressor run for?

Hey all,

We have a:
Cruisair
STQ16U-410A 115/60/1
Stowaway Turbo Series

And i'm wondering what some folks compressor run times are.

In heat mode our compressor only runs for about 3 min. before it kicks off. It then stays off for about 5 min, before the compressor kicks back on and only runs for 3 min again.

When in AC mode the compressor will run for about 8 min before shutting off.

Am i crazy... I feel like the compressor should run longer. So I'm just curious to see what some of you are getting or at best what the unit SHOULD be able to do.

- I've checked the airway and filter(s).
- Even if i set the temp super high or low it doesn't change it.
- No error codes.
- Even if i turn the fan to manual 100%. The compressor time is still the same.

- Thanks all.

So your system is running at a 50% duty cycle. That seems totally reasonable to me. The amount of ON time vs OFF time is simply a function of the load and the size of the compressor. if it is on half the time, that is just about perfect.

Find something else to obsess over.

The duty cycle will change depending on the temp difference in and out of the boat (delta T), water temp, etc. Also I cant remember the proper term for it, but if you want 70 deg heat, the thermostat may come ON at 69 and shut OFF at 71. Or it may be 68/72. This temp spread can be adjusted on some thermostats. That will affect run time.

I have the same unit as you. Im in SoCal and in winter there is about a 10-15 deg delta T with water temps in the mid 50's. The duty cycle seems about what you are getting. But if its doing its job and not running continuously I wouldnt worry about it.

A simple heating thermostat will turn 'on' at one temperature, and 'off' at a higher temperature. [opposite for cooling t'stat].
This keeps the thermostat from cycling on and off too quickly.
The difference, between these values, is called “hysteresis”, or sometimes “dead band”.
