I am very skeptical about bedliners not being waterproof, assuming well applied so cintinuous thickness minimum of X mm, and a tight bond with a pretty static (as in not requiring much flexibility) substrate.

And many such are very smooth, let you add the solid if you want the rough finish.

As for "sanitary" we all know that's not an objective term, so I'd be happy to simply skip that aspect.

I'm sorry, I was thinking of a different product. Polyurethane bedliner material is waterproof as you said, but I think the solvents would dissolve the foam if applied directly. The MSDS for Herculiner list xylene as a major component. ... I think you'd need a non toxic version both for being around your food and also so it doesn't eat the foam base.

Still doesn't seem like a safe coating around my leafy veggies.

Re: Ice Box Conversion to Spill Over Fridge/Freezer

I only store refrigerated or frozen food in watertight containers, use coolers with "polar tubes" for drinks and other stuff just needing "cool" as opposed to cold.

But point taken on the solvent and actual toxicity issue.

Any other suggestions along those lines - lining directly painted in the foam box - would be welcome.

What is usually used to finish a fiberglass liner?

2-part polyurethane..... not food safe, but I believe it is safe once it has outgassed like epoxy. I'm not 100% sure on this, and honestly, don't know if it's much different than the bed liner.

Re: Ice Box Conversion to Spill Over Fridge/Freezer

I found that it does take a while for any lay up using epoxy or polyester to off gas. I try to let liners sit outside in the sun fog a week before installing them . Once they are in I still get myself a gallon activated carbon from the local aquarium supply store put it all in an old pillow case and drop that inside the new box for as long is needed to absorb any off gassing .

Re: Ice Box Conversion to Spill Over Fridge/Freezer

Also back to the point of liners not being strong enough . I could not source any fibreglass board that was rigid enough that I w oils consider cutting and epoxying it in place . My solution is to lay it up myself . Or basically just build FRP board myself and cut it to size . This way you can have control of the strength of the liner

Did another round of thickened epoxy along the seams:

Will have to probably do one more round to make sure all the joints are water tight. The slow hardener is, well, being slow at hardening, so i might not get that chance till tomorrow morning.

I also have the top insulation cut to fit and am working on the lid.

I have seen a product called "Brew Coat" recommended for painting potable water tanks. Seems like a similar application. No personal experience.
Low VOC, FDA rated epoxy coating for brewery tanks linings, potable water tanks and food processing.

Got the top epoxied in:

Should be able to sand tonight to smooth out the seams and reapply a final helping of epoxy afterwards.

Have also realized that I don't have enough FRP to finish the lids or spillover divider, so both will have to wait till we are in Florida. Not all bad, as it gives me time to test if I should upgrade the insulation in these two areas to Aerogel.

Off to prep the boat for getting her mast pulled tomorrow.

Sounds interesting, but at $220 for a two gallon kit (the minimum), it isn't feasible for me. But I'll keep looking around because I'll probably want to paint the inside once this is all done.

There are other similar products available that are cheaper. As for the FRP sheet not being sturdy enough, could you not double or triple the floor?

Not really necessary... just treat it with a bit more respect than I did at first, and all is fine.

Or add a sheet of 1/4 ply between the foam and the frp

I don't understand the concern over the Home Depot FRP panels. I have covered literally every bulkhead in our boat with this stuff and the interior of the freezer and find it very tough.
