Jabsco Manual Toilet - water does not come in...

Good afternoon folks!

Well, it starts - Rocinante is back in the water and I'm going through the various systems... so far so good!

One issue I'd love some expert advice on is my Jabsco Toilet.
1. Emptying the bowl is working perfectly.
2. Filling the bowl for flushing is a no go.
a) Yes, the flush control lever is in the open position
b) Yes, the seacock is open

Handle pumps just fine and I hear air, but no water comes in.
I've pumped it for quite a bit (~30 times) assuming it needed to "prime" since it's been dry for so long.

From reading the manual, I've deduced the most likely culprit is the "Top Valve Gasket"

Before I go out and buy said gasket I was hoping for some thoughts from our learned members!

Thank you in advance,

Thank you in advance,
Could be the top valve gasket. If you removed the top to winterize it is easy to misposition the lever and flap. Check the manual.

It could be a prime, although that is rare. However, if you have not greased the pump, this would be a good time. Use lots (Superlube).

The intake could be blocked with marine life. A screw driver will help.

If rebuilding is required, buy the new pump unit rather than the kit. The new pump practically gives you a new head, while the kit costs 70% as much and does give nearly as much life.

Before attempting to repair the toilet, I would make sure water is getting to it. If the intake to the toilet is below the waterline, remove the hose and see if water flows.

If it doesn't, there's a blockage. If it does, the problem is with the toilet.

You can buy the entire pump assembly for about $70 and it's very easy to install. This gives you a brand new toilet except fot the bowl, seat and base.

You're welcome.

I actually had that happen years ago. I was stuck on a sandbar (different boat) and flushed the toilet a few times while waiting for a tow. Filled the line up with sand and had to hook a garden hose up to the toilet end and
reverse flush the line.

If you left the pump in the "dry" mode when you laid up for the winter, that puts a pucker in the top valve gasket (part # 21 on the exploded drawing) Jabsco Manual Twist & Lock , which would prevent the pump from being able to bring in any water.

Thank you peghall, that's where my head (no pun intended) was at!
I'll post the solution once it's working!

Try removing it and soaking in very warm water for awhile before reinstalling it. That worked for me in a similar situation.

FWIW...

Jabsco part #35 is a valve spring in the pump head assembly that sits in a nipple. If not there or misaligned your water intake will not flow. The spring can take a walk a bout on tear down.

Thank you Crew of Turning - good to know all possible culprits!
Will keep it in mind once I open this puppy up.

Re: Jabsco Manual Toilet - water does not come in...

Not to be one of those guys who changes the subject, but, I recently experienced the same symptom on my traditional marine head (after fixing it in July 2015), and when I started the repair work I discovered my macerator was also dead. Further investigation revealed a cracked pump housing. At that point, I decided to replace the whole ungodly mess with a composting toilet, and I have never looked back. I just completed a five-day movement from Southport, NC to Amelia Island, FL, and I love my composting toilet.

Just sayin'.

Thank you in advance,
I had the exact same problem on the same toilet.

Turned out to be multiple problems. It needed a new Top Valve Gasket, a new o ring at the top of the shaft and a new o ring on the piston.

I replaced things the same order and each time it was improved slightly. I had thought the main piston o ring was OK because it pumped out OK but I now think it was good enough when surrounded by fluid but not good enough to create a prime.

It all worked great after fitting the main piston o ring.
