Re: Leaving the boat for a week - Water tank empty or full?

You're over thinking it. Enjoy you week and put it out of your mind.

Re: Leaving the boat for a week - Water tank empty or full?

Yes - overthinking imo

Different conditions in BC but I drain in the winter, shock the tank using bleach in the spring, waste a couple of tanks to eliminate the bleach taste/smell and then use all spring, summer and fall. If I had to choose, I'd leave them full but really don't think it matters

No worries for a week, but as a rule of thumb keep that water flowing, your system will thank you by not growing things if you keep that water moving, wash downs, fresh water heads, running each sink and shower a couple times a month, when you are not living full time is much better then letting sit.

Re: Leaving the boat for a week - Water tank empty or full?

Our tanks have been empty for extended period of time while I agonized over whether to try and drill new holes for the spare galley foot pump with the wrong mounting hole pattern or break down and buy the proper pump. I just bought the proper pump and am ready to install and fill. I see mentions of filtering and UV treatment being performed on the incoming city water.

Here in Jacksonville the water from the tap is, yucky. I installed a whole house water filtration system in our house and the water we drink also goes through the water filter in the refrigerator.

Would it make sense to run the water through a filtration system that screws onto the end of the hose from the dock, or some similar contraption? What would you recommend or is there a publication that covers the subject matter? On the other hand I suppose I could just install a high quality system under the sink and get my drinking water from there.

Why would I be kidding?

I'm a fungo here, don't even know what I don't know at this point.

Hell, I don't even know how to make toast aboard.

Re: Leaving the boat for a week - Water tank empty or full?

I'd like to add to what everyone else has written. The longest we've left tank water sitting on the boat has been just about 9 months, perhaps a little longer one time. The water has been fine when we've returned to the boat, and of course we just left it. It would be very wasteful of a precious resource to just pump it all out. We carry a total of 800 liters in two 400 l. tanks under the cabin sole. It lasts us about 6 weeks. We do a lot more handwashing of clothing now than we used to.

If the water's safe to begin with, it should not deteriorate rapidly in tanks. Where it is questionable, I'd be emptying, and replacing with new, and treating it with chlorine, then filtering out the chlorine before the taps, as we did on our previous boat. If you're really concerned, you could take a sample of the tank water to a lab and have it analyzed to see what has escaped your filtration (if anything).

Ann

A week is nothing, don’t worry over it. Your tank is probably in the bottom of the hull and stays as cool as the surrounding water.

I was waiting for someone else to post this. One week, or one month, are nothing (if not freezing or not really hot). Three or more months are when things can get funky.

As others have pointed out, empty water tanks (and full diesel tanks) for storage.

To ensure you empty your water lines, once your tank(s) is empty turn off your water pump, open all your faucets, and use a reversed vacuum cleaner to blow into your tank(s) vent pipe(s). Emptying the hot water cylinder is more of a pain, but if you’re lucky it will have a drain. Otherwise, disconnect the output line.

We sail the Caribbean. The boat stays on the hard May to November. We never empty the tanks, 280 gallons.
