Manual Pump Tap driving me crazy!

I recently replaced the 2 manual Pump taps in the galley, salt water and fresh water. They were the local shops own brand, I guess just a standard pump tap.

The Salt water tap is fine, no problems there. The fresh water tap however started off fine but has since had problems with water coming out at the pump shaft (where it slides up and down into the tap). It starts to build up pressure and sometimes can't be pumped anymore due to this.

I returned the tap thinking it had a fault, and was given a replacement which is also having the same issue.

What's going on? Please help

In the second photo you can see the water around the pump shaft

Re: Manual Pump Tap driving me crazy!

That’s a simple packing or o-ring. But if your building pressure and unable to pump, it’s not from the leak (unless the reciprocating shaft is binding).

Are you sure your building pressure? Is the resistance on the up or down stroke?

Do you have a parts schematic of these pumps or a manufacturer name?

Re: Manual Pump Tap driving me crazy!

At the tip of the tap (where the water normally comes out) is there a screen/filter? Can it be unscrewed/removed?

Building up pressure usually means a clog in the tap somewhere. Then the water forces its way out past the plunger seal (which is not built to deal with much pressure).

That pump, however, can also be hard to pump (it feels like pressure) if there is a blockage on the suction side (you start to pull more and more of a vacuum). Normally, if this is the case, the plunger will pull itself back down if you let go.

Re: Manual Pump Tap driving me crazy!

I recommend installing spigots and changing the pumps out for foot pumps. Never saw the practically of hands pumps.

Re: Manual Pump Tap driving me crazy!

The resistance is in the up pull. It almost seems to lock and needs a good yank to get it up, then I am able to pump for a bit.

The tap only came with a simple packaging that had basic instructions on installation, i believe it was a Burnsco own brand. I can't find any additional information online

There is no filter at the tip or anything that unscrews.

The plunger doesn't pull back down when I let go. It's just very hard to pull up and almost seems to lock when fully down and needs a good yank ( from my partner because I can't budge it) to get it going.

Re: Manual Pump Tap driving me crazy!

This sounds more like binding on crappy stem seals than any sort of pressure builds

Thanks

No worries.

What I’m saying is that the seals around the shaft that are leaking are most likely crapola and there’s a good chance that they’re grabbing the pump shaft making you think there’s a lot of pressure.

I personally would reverse engineer the pump and replace the offe ding seals with a better material.

Re: Manual Pump Tap driving me crazy!

Hi, try swapping the pumps over, you say that the salt water pump is ok but the fresh water one is problematic, by swapping the supply hoses between the pumps you will find weather it is the pump or a problem before the pump. If the pump that was previously the salt water pump works fine on the fresh water side, bingo, it's the pump, if the problem persists on the fresh water side then the problem is between the pump and the water supply causing a vacuum.
Good luck.

As Minggat said install a foot pump. The whale gusher last for years. I have never had any luck with the bench pumps.

Both hands free. No "one hand clapping".

Misty Clipper. Now that name rings a bell. I think that it used to be based in Waikawa Picton New Zealand?
