I just got a response from Nancy Graves at C-Head. Just email them & they'll send you the super-duper lady's diverter!

It's great dealing with a company that cares about it's customers.

Feces TP goes in the head. My spouse puts her pee-T in a bag. As NH says, it just adds additional fibre to the pile. It’s all about keeping the right moisture balance.

Re: My 2 Dollar DIY Composting Head

Has anyone had trouble with (US) authorities over a DIY composting head aboard?

With no hidden plumbing or overboard thru hulls, there really isn't anything to inspect. Short of dumping overboard right in front of them, it's really tough for them to claim any issues.

I guess they assume that anyone so amazingly responsible as to have a composting head, obviously would be in full compliance with all requirement . It would be a waste of their time to bother checking.

Another reason why composting heads are the best option for cruisers .

Re: My 2 Dollar DIY Composting Head

Our head is a 5 gallon waste basket for solids with a 3 gallon urine diverter attached to the front (wrapped in a pretty cherry container). The thing I hated most about this setup v.s commercial units like the Natures Head, C-head, or Airhead, is that without a trap door, I spend a lot of time looking at old poo in the solids bin. We have now switched our process up and layer the solids like a lasagna. Solids, coir, dirty TP and then a sheet of paper towel to cover the entire mess until the next "deposit". It keeps everything looking so much better.

Actually the C-Head has a cover for the opening & then a lid for the seat but once you stir it there's nothing to see anyway. It just looks like dirt.

My wife says her farts smell like roses but I say they smell like poo. Anyone care to argue about that?

Re: My 2 Dollar DIY Composting Head

I'm 'this' close to replacing my headmate head with a home (boat?) built composter.

I'm in Mazatlán right now and I'm curious about different mediums for the bucket. There's a home depot nearby and a petco not too far away. I haven't searched out coconut coir here, but there should be cedar bedding material at the petco.

My question is for those who are using composters; what various media have you used and what are the pros and cons of each?

Also, Scout is correct. A rose by any other name......

I’ve only ever used coir. I buy it in bulk via Amazon.
