Re: My 2 Dollar DIY Composting Head

Perfect. The two guys that I've been following in the composter world have answered. I'll check the home depot on Monday I've got to grab some plywood for the construction anyway.

Good call on Amazon Mike. Amazon.mx has it in stock. 2 day delivery to the marina.

Any other media recommendations? I ask because I've heard cedar sawdust repels flies and whatnot.

Thanks,

goat

Buckets, bottles, separator all on board. I think I'm good to go.

Thanks again.

I’m curious about the cedar shavings as well. My concern would be that it might retain liquid and not easily dry out. My recollection of having pet hamsters as a kid was that the stuff would turn into a sopping mess. But others here have said it works, so I too am curious. I may try adding some this coming season to give it a try.

Good luck .

Re: My 2 Dollar DIY Composting Head

Coir is so cheap and readily available just about anywhere and compressed bricks don't take up any room you can carry a years worth or more easily why sweat it about potentially more expensive alternatives.

Re: My 2 Dollar DIY Composting Head

Flies can be a problem with composting toilets. I lived on a boat for a couple years that used peat and whatever you call the very thin curly pieces of cedar sprinkled on top after mixing and I don't think it made much difference if any at all As far as flies-maggots are concerned but it helped to aerate which meant faster, more efficient drying. With the small amount used to accomplish this cost and storage is almost irrelevant.

OK, so the liquid is the odoriferous part. How critical is the seal between the "funnel" and the milk jug hole?

not important as long as the funnel goes into the jug. Just a teaspoon or so of sugar to the jug . ( don't know why but it stops the smell.)

So to be correct it is the combination of the two that causes the stink. A few drops of urine occasionally probably is not going to cause a problem. I think you want a good seal between your diverter and collection device. There is no reason for any type of matter or liquid to go anywhere but where you want it. I have stated this before but one of the issues that men have is the ability to stand up and urinate. Next time you use a porta- Potty look at the set up they use, very easy to duplicate.

I use a separate collection container a transmission funnel and a ping pong ball.

Re: My 2 Dollar DIY Composting Head

My girlfriend occasionally urinates some in the poo bucket... my poo bucket has a combo of coconut coir and wood fibre kitty litter. A bucket of coir/kitty litter sits in a cubbyhole under the counter.

A little shot of flying insect spray in the bucket once a week or so during the summer keeps bugs out. I don't do anything special about urine smell and haven't noticed any stink. I do have a solar deck vent.
