No one mentioned that Teflon tape comes in grades and thicknesses (white, pink, yellow).

Though I'm more inclined to use Teflon dope for general piping, the softer yellow (gas) tape can be very handy on smaller fittings. It's just not rated for high pressure steam. Two turns is plenty.

The other point no one mentioned is that leaks are almost always the result of poor threads; take a good look at them before you assemble. Often the male part is banged up. This is why most equipment/tanks come with female fittings. Dope won't fix bad threads.

I have learnt something as I did not know about thread dope at all, have always used tape. Seems that most of the threads talk highly of dope.
