Plastic Bladder Makes Water Taste Awful

I have had a plastic (PVC) water bladder for a while and lately the taste of the water has got really bad (plastic taste)
I have emptied and refilled the water tank and that has improved it a bit.
Any suggestions.

Bad Taste

just check that the filler hose is "food grade" not your garden variety , they can look identical but you wouldn't beleive the bad taste out of the garden variety. i have been caught with this problem even in a stainless tank.

Every now and then I would worry about algae growth in ours, and I would rinse it with a bleach-water solution. I found that the bleach made the plastic taste in subsequent water batches worse. If I used StarSan (from my homebrew equipment) to sanitize the bladder, the plastic taste was much much less. Not sure if this has any bearing on your situation, but thought I'd mention it . . .

Step 1: Rip out all that fool plumbing.
Step 2: keep all your water in Gal. jugs. Easy to inspect, refill, wash, not painful to throw out if moldy, cheap to replace.

IF THERE IS AVAILABLE SPACE, you would be wise to consider a new plastic tank for water storage.

Have you tried adding baking Soda to the water, it solved the problem in an auxiliary Vetus PVC tank I keep on board.

Re: Plastic Bladder Makes Water Taste Awful

We bought a yacht with bladders and have never had a problem with the taste because we use filters - inline both before it goes in to the tanks and right at the galley sink. Where possible we also fill from rainwater or spring water, as the chlorine (and other additives) in town water taste disgusting to people used to living off the land. Having said that, I am fairly certain those dreaded BPAs are in the lining of the bladders, so when money and time permit we will upgrade to HDPE or stainless tanks.
I take it you are referring to a chemical type taste, because if it's not a chemical taste perhaps a critter got into your tank somehow? Dead frogs are well known for making water taste disgusting, though rats and possums are worse! Just added that to help you smile: fresh water is one of the MAGNIFICENT joys of cruising so do whatever you can to remedy the problem!

Re: Plastic Bladder Makes Water Taste Awful

We tried all the additives etc, nothing worked. We threw away the Vetus Bladder an bought another brand. No more problems.
