According to Propane 101 a 20 pound tank is filled to 38 pounds that equals 20 pounds of propane.

As was stated, the exchange services instead only fill to 15 pounds "for safety".

There is no question the exchange places are a ripoff

but it's not a high dollar amount per tank, if a proper refill place is not conveniently located at the time

like $19 rather than $12, basically a feed at McDs difference

Re: Propane tank recertification along East Coast

The big-chain home improvement store sells the 15 pounds of propane in a 20 pound tank exchange for $20.

The U-Haul stores near me all have refill stations that detail the savings of full refill versus partial full exchange. (Edit: For some reason the manually placed URL brings to the correct page, but the auto click brings to the top page...)

I don't know where you guys sail, but I carried a steel 20 lb cylinder once as a back up for two weeks.
At the end of the two weeks it was rusted pretty bad, I'll not do that again.

For the guy at Vero Beach with steel cylinder he swaps, they let you on the bus with it?

Three bucks more and is picked up and delivered to the Marina office

I carry four months worth of propane, that way refills are not needed very often

I got mine done a Suburban propane in NH a few years ago. It was like $30 including the refill.

But you need to find a distribution center and not one of the small offices.

Not saying there isn’t one, but I’ve never seen nor heard of a dive shop that does Hydro’s. They all send them out to be done by specialized shops, very specialized.
All dive shops will do a VIP as there is no training and no requirement for one, it’s just a money maker.
Hydrostatic testing is the safest way to pressure test any pressure vessel. I did dozens of hydrostatic tests in my old job in the oil industry. For the pressures propane tanks are tested at, only simple basic equipment is needed.

Propane tanks should be hydrostatic tested. Plenty of places do it in Australia.

And many dive shops in Australia do hydrostatic pressure testing on site. Just one of a stack of "hits":

Thanks for any help offered!
You're going the wrong way. Got mine done in FL for $5 a tank.

Hi,

For the Annapolis area, Arundel Gas & Water Conditioning in Edgewater provides a free recert if you refill your tanks at the same time.

I have a big heavy-duty duffle bag with a padded shoulder strap. The 20lb tank fits inside it perfectly. The bus drivers never even looked at it or me the multiple times I got on and got off either way to or from the Walmart having to transfer at the bus hub each way. $14.99 was best price in town there for an exchange.

Never had any issues with rust. A little surface rust, but with a sunbrella cover the tank does fine. No worse than the typical used exchange tank.
