Re: Pumping out possibility required for holding tanks in US coastal waters?

Others have already pointed out the wisdom in having a deck pump out installed, just let me add a little color. If you visit Boot Key Harbor in Marathon in the Florida Keys, you may not stay longer than a week if you do not have a holding tank that can be pumped out. They have a mobile pump out boat that makes the rounds in the harbor, the cost of which is included in your mooring fees.

simply put by others- three basic thoughts-
technically it is illegal to discharge untreated sewage within many 3 mile limits- you do not meet the requirements of larger vessels that are prohibited untreated black water and the focus is turning to the recreational vessel

besides limiting the cruising grounds and flexibility- what are you saving if you are already into retrofit and have the boat torn apart?

resale value definitely- particularly in the North American domain.

A small holding tank utilized as part of an in-line head system may provide opportunity to eliminate the loop and anti-siphon valve- all in same space

the pump out provides another method of pressurizing and cleaning plugged line,

Personally it is a no-brainer

Install the deck pump-out. It sits flush in the deck and has a screw-out sealed top. I think there is one fitting used in most parts of the world. The toilet has to have a macerator.

I believe that since 2013 all Massachusetts waters are officially declared a "No Discharge Zone" If you go for the deck fitting, I recommend a cap you remove with a winch handle - no searching for the "key"

I haven't seen one of those, but sounds like a great idea. Especially for a sailboat. I seem to have deck fitting keys all over the place, myself. Even have one on my keychain. I wish I had that problem with drill chuck keys.
