refrigeration insulation infrared thermometer

Is it possible to tell the R value of insulation by using a infrared thermometer? I am looking to add a larger freezer and want to determine if my insulation is any good without resorting to ripping the existing box apart.

TIA

Re: refrigeration insulation infrared thermometer

You can determine the R value of the box pretty precisely (and simply and inexpensively) by doing an 'ice melt test'.

You can then determine where the leaks/worst spots (eg is the whole box uniformly bad or is just one side or edge the culprit) are using IR thermometer.
